As India Crosses 2 Lakh Startups, What Services Does a Startup Actually Need?
By ATTPL HOLDCO / ATTPL GROUP Editorial Team · · 2 min read
With about 2.23 lakh recognised startups reported by March 2026, founders need strong legal, finance, tech and compliance foundations. Here is a practical list.

A crowded, supportive ecosystem
A government release in June 2026 reported that recognised startups in India reached around 2.23 lakh by March 2026. The ecosystem offers many resources, but also fierce competition.
The seven services most startups need
- Company registration and DPIIT recognition.
- Founders' agreements, IP and contracts.
- Accounting, GST and payroll set-up.
- Funding readiness: model, deck and data room.
- Product and technology, including security and data protection.
- Brand, trademark and marketing.
- Compliance calendar and board processes.

Sequence matters
Fix legal and tax foundations before heavy marketing spend; they are far harder to repair later.
Sequencing the first year
In the first three months, set up the legal entity, bank account, accounting and founders' agreement. In months three to six, register the brand, put contracts and policies in place and build the first version of the product. In months six to twelve, focus on customers, financial reporting, compliance routines and fundraising readiness. Doing things in the right order reduces rework.
Keep a single shared folder for all legal and financial documents from day one.
Costly mistakes to avoid
Founders often delay formal agreements, mix personal and company money, ignore compliance deadlines or rely on verbal promises with early employees and freelancers. Each of these becomes expensive to fix when an investor or acquirer reviews the company.
Using ecosystem support wisely
Incubators, accelerators, government schemes and mentors can be valuable, but choose those aligned with your stage and sector. Measure benefits in terms of customers, funding and learning, not only brand association.
